Protect Voting Rights Against the SAVE Act

The Save Act would make it harder for millions of eligible Americans to register and vote by requiring strict proof of citizenship, such as a passport, birth certificate, and other documents. Many Americans lack these documents, cannot easily or quickly obtain them, and cannot afford the fees for processing such documentation. The SAVE Act is a modern-day poll tax, which is unnecessary and immoral, as there is virtually no election fraud in our voting system. A minuscule number of people vote more than once—a tiny risk compared to a major obstacle to voting.

Call for passage of UNRWA Funding Emergency Restoration Act of 2025

As Palestine refugees endure one of the worst humanitarian crises of our era and the darkest chapter in Palestinian history, the U.S. government is still withholding funding from UNRWA (the United Nations Relief and Works Agency), which is the backbone of the humanitarian response in the devastated Gaza Strip and a significant stabilizing presence in the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem. Urge your U.S. Senator to co-sponsor the UNRWA Emergency Funding Restoration Act of 2025.

Protect Freedom of the Press – Support Public Media

Public media’s vital role in our nation is being questioned, and the funding that supports WBEZ and other stations is at risk. For nearly 82 years, WBEZ has been Chicago’s trusted source for independent, fact-based journalism, education and emergency information. As misinformation spreads and public trust declines, strong public media systems help foster informed discussion and civic engagement — while weakened ones leave communities vulnerable to division and disinformation. With federal funding for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) set to expire on March 14, Congress will soon decide its future. Ask Congress to protect public media.

Voting Rights

The Save Act would make it harder for millions of eligible Americans to register and vote by requiring strict proof of citizenship, such as a passport or birth certificate, and other documents. Many Americans lack these documents, cannot easily or quickly obtain them, and cannot afford the fees for processing such documentation. The SAVE Act is a modern-day poll tax, and it is unnecessary and immoral. There is virtually no election fraud in our voting system. Only a minuscule number of people vote more than once—a tiny risk compared to a major obstacle to voting.

Save the Veteran’s Health Administration

The Veterans Health Administration (VHA) is in jeopardy with the Veterans Access Act (H.R.740). Under the guise of improving health care for veterans, the bill would limit choices, decrease coverage, and reduce access to care. This could lead to dismantling the VHA and diverting federal funds into the private sector with a disproportionately adverse effect on rural veterans.

Prevent A National Abortion Ban

Anti-abortion politicians want to impose a nationwide abortion ban. H.R. 722, introduced by Rep. Eric Burlison (R-MO), would apply the 14th Amendment’s “equal protection” clause to “unborn persons,” granting legal rights to fertilized eggs, embryos, and fetuses—effectively banning abortion nationwide, even in states where voters have chosen to protect it.

Restore CDC guidance for sexual, reproductive, and LGBTQ+ Health

The current Administration has removed crucial health information from the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) website. Censored information includes resources on contraception, gender-affirming care, sexually-transmitted infections, and treatment and prevention of HIV. Access to reliable, evidence-based health information is more critical than ever, and this removal of the CDC’s resources constitutes a public health emergency.

Immigration Rights

The No Bailout for Sanctuary Cities Act (H.R.32), is an extremist attempt to punish cities and states that refuse to act as ICE’s personal deputies. This bill would strip federal funding from cities and states that refuse to assist with mass deportations—including funding for school meals, public transit, disaster relief, and public health programs.

Fight tax cuts for the rich

The Senate will be voting soon on a couple of “reconciliation” bills, both of which will INCREASE Pentagon spending rather than reduce it, despite its being by far the most wasteful agency in the entire US Government.

Protect Medicaid Funding

Republicans are already considering multiple approaches to reduce Medicaid spending. All proposed approaches will have the net effect of reducing access to life-saving and life-enhancing health care, particularly for children, people with disabilities, and seniors. Read more here.

Save NIH and NSF Research Funding

The Trump administration moved to cut billions of dollars of funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and National Science Foundation (NSF) by placing an immediate cap on so-called “indirect costs”. This new policy will cause an immediate and massive funding shortfall at research institutions nationwide, forcing layoffs and jeopardizing critical scientific research. Read more here.

Stop the Defunding of USAID

The Trump administration is taking unlawful action to dismantle USAID, the U.S. Agency for International Development, which provides crucial humanitarian, developmental, and security assistance to countries through supplies, expertise, and funding. The USAID was created by law and cannot be unilaterally abolished by the executive branch. Read more here.

Protect the EPA

Congress has oversight responsibility over the EPA and should be taking active steps to ensure that the agency maintains its mission to protect human health and the environment. However, both Trump’s campaign speeches and Zeldin’s initial address to EPA staff have made it clear that addressing climate change and climate injustice are out and taking the side of polluters is in.
