The Comparative Religion Discussion Group will meet on Sunday October 26, 2025 at 1:00 pm to 2:30 pm at the Church (and on Zoom). Zoom address to be sent out on October 25, 2025 by separate email.
Topics: 1) Evil and Religion and 2) Halloween and its Religious Background
Halloween is celebrated in October by millions of people throughout the world. We will examine the religious evolution of Halloween and whether Halloween is secular, Christian, or Pagan.
The topic of “evil and religion” focuses on one of the most profound philosophical and religious questions in human history. Why do evil and suffering exist in the world? The problem of evil encompasses both “natural evil” (e.g., hurricanes) and “moral evil” (e.g., serial killers). In this discussion, we will consider the definition of evil, its causes and effects, as well as the role of religion in the existence of evil.
These two topics of discussion benefit from reading the foundational reading material (2 papers) that are provided upon request. The primary source material is several lectures from The Great Courses (aka Teaching Company) and from a variety of historical and religious websites. This paper is an update of original discussions that the group had in 2019 and 2020.
