Topic: Back to Fundamentals: What is religion and why does it exist?
The Comparative Religion Discussion Group will meet on Sunday September 28, 2025 at 1:00 pm to 2:30 pm at the Church (and on Zoom). Zoom address to be sent out on September 27, 2025 by separate email.
You cannot fully understand the world without understanding religion, which is a strong motivator of human behavior. Religious ideas have produced some of the most extreme examples of good and evil in human history. When you think about the different religions, it is reasonable to ask some very basic questions: What is a religion and why does it exist? What are the beliefs and values that constitute a religion? What value to the individual and society does religion contribute or detract from? Is it inspired by the desire to find answers or by the desire to believe in a power greater than oneself? Or is it an evolutionary coping mechanism.? At this meeting, we will discuss how do we go about answering some of these fundamental questions.
This topic of discussion benefits from reading the foundational reading material (1 paper) that is provided upon request. The primary source material is several lectures from The Great Courses (aka Teaching Company) and from a variety of Wikipedia religious websites. This paper is an update of an original discussion that the group had in 2019.
