The Board of Trustees

Our church is governed by a member-elected Board of Trustees consisting of nine positions, plus two ex-officio members (the minister and director of religious education). Elected trustees serve staggered three-year terms, with three positions expiring each year at the end of May. We have a modified policy-based model of governance which frees the board to set long-range goals and create policies and procedures to cover church operations. Committees and other groups are empowered to carry out the ministries of the church, using our policies as a guide.

We are exploring further changes to our governance practice. By communicating with and requesting input from other church leaders and our members, we aim to increase clarity and efficiency by engaging with staff, reducing overlap in current committees and teams, and redefining Board roles to better fit a refined governance structure.

Committees

Committees are the backbone of our church operations. They are staffed mostly by volunteers, drawing those among us with talents and passion in a variety of areas to enhance our thriving, engaging programs. In this way, we carry out the goals and mission of the church and also are able to live our values daily in the wider community. For current governing purposes, committees are structured by the work they do or people they serve.

SPIRITUALITY includes committees such as Sunday Services, Music, Youth Religious Education, Adult Enrichment, and the Library/Bookstore. (Trustee Pat Lichtman, spirituality@dupageuuchurch.org)

COMMUNITY includes the Congregational Life committee, Circle Suppers, Chalice Circles, Visitor Relations and Small Group Ministry. (Trustee Agnes Kovacs, community@dupageuuchurch.org)

OUTREACH serves our mission to have a positive impact on the lives of others in the wider community and to change the world in ways that reflect our values. We do this work in many ways, including PADS (Public Action to Deliver Shelter), our racial justice initiative (SMILE mentor/intern program and UU prison ministry initiative), Green Sanctuary (environmental action and justice), reproductive justice, and via a monthly donation to member-nominated non-profits that perform critical local work for mental health, literacy, the LGBT community, empowering youth, seniors in need, and others. STEWARDSHIP includes activities that ensure our financial health through the work of the Finance committee, Annual Budget Drive, and the annual Auction. (Trustee Karen Peck, stewardship@dupageuuchurch.org)

ADMINISTRATION committees include those that provide support activities needed by an organization, such as Facilities, Media Services and Marketing. (Trustee Ann Arellano, administration@dupageuuchurch.org)

These volunteer-managed committees and teams report to the elected Board of Trustees. In addition, Personnel, Nominating/Leadership Development, Endowment, and Pastoral Ministry Associates, are committees filled by church members who are either elected or appointed.
